How to keep an inventory of household items
A home inventory is your emergency asset register: what you own, what it is worth, and the proof to back a claim.
If your home were burgled or burned tomorrow, could you list everything you lost, from memory, with values? Almost nobody can. A home inventory solves that before it happens.
Why keep one
- It tells you how much cover you actually need
- It is the evidence an underwriter asks for at claim time
- It stops you forgetting items, the usual reason claims come up short
Go room by room
Work through the house one room at a time so nothing is missed:
- Living room: TV, sound system, furniture, consoles
- Kitchen: fridge, cooker, microwave, small appliances
- Bedrooms: wardrobes, electronics, watches and jewellery
- Study or office: laptops, printers, cameras
- Outside and stores: generator, tools, garden equipment
For each item, record
The make and model, today's replacement cost, and a photo and receipt where you have them. Serial numbers for anything electronic.
Keep it off-site and current
An inventory in a drawer burns with the house. Keeping it in VaultCova means it is stored off your premises, valued over time, and ready to become a claim, or a schedule for cover, whenever you need it. Just describe items to Cova, or import a list from a spreadsheet, and it builds the register for you.
